Pinterest Adds Search Advertising

Pinterest introduced its first search ad offering on February 1st, almost seven years after the company launched. The new search functionality comes via Kenshoo, an advertising vendor in Pinterest’s marketing partner program. It’s sold for three KPIs: impressions clicks on promoted or buyable pins and engagement, which on Pinterest means someone saving a pin to their own board.Adding search gives Pinterest the ability to tap into another part of that buying behavior — searching with the intent of a purchase (whether the user realizes it or not). Nearly all of the searches on Pinterest aren’t brand searches, global head of partnerships Jon Kaplan said. So Pinterest will now give some advertisers the ability to show ads against keywords and for shopping campaigns through Pinterest’s search.

Facebook Ads: Are You Allocating As Much As Google AdWords?

Are you allocating the same marketing budget on Facebook Ads as Google AdWords? Here’s how I look at it, at a high level… As of today, Alphabet (the parent company behind Google) has a market capitalization is $678.9 billion. Facebook’s market cap is $440.9 billion. $440.9 billion / $678.9 billion implies that Facebook is about 64.5% the size of Alphabet. Given Facebook’s size and scale, it’s perfectly reasonable to allocate 64.5% as much money on Facebook Ads. Is Google Trying to Kill SEO 0529

The larger question here is chilling to virtually any small business which seeks a higher ranking, since Google’s own definition of search engine manipulation is vague and unpredictable. According to a brief filed by e-ventures’ attorney Alexis Arena at Flaster Greenberg PC, “Under Google’s definition, any website owner that attempts to cause its website to rank higher, in any manner, could be guilty of ‘pure spam’ and blocked from Google’s search results, without explanation or redress.”
“It seemed as though I was personally targeted by Google,” said Jeev Trika, CEO of e-ventures Worldwide. “I would purchase a brand new domain and post nothing more than ‘bye bye world’ and within minutes, Google would de-index that domain too. So, Google’s argument that it was removing websites because they were violating Google webmaster guidelines falls flat. It was not about the website content, it was about targeting the website owner. The fact that Google targets people like this is not something that is consistent with their published policies, or what they tell the public.”
The brief notes that “search engine manipulation” includes anything done to a website to make it more visible on Google -- and therefore virtually any business using generally accepted SEO tactics (or any marketing tactics, for that matter) could be accused of manipulation, giving Google an excuse to de-list a website arbitrarily and outside of its algorithmic process, or as in the case of e-ventures Worldwide, de-index all of a website owner’s properties summarily. Should Google prevail, commonly used tactics such as title tags, incorporating keywords in headlines, incorporating legitimate backlinks, or even writing a daily blog would all be suspect. The outcome of this case could dramatically affect how virtually every business in the world does its online marketing.
A First Amendment question.
Google is claiming First Amendment rights, stating that it is a publisher and free to publish or not publish anything it sees fit. How Google defines publishing is a bit of a stretch -- they do publish a constantly evolving list of algorithmically-ranked links to websites, but that is by no means the same as operating as a media outlet which exercises editorial discretion. By journalistic definition, a SERP isn’t the same thing as an article -- it’s just a mechanically ranked database. Google’s entire case however, rests on a First Amendment argument.
There is an important distinction being brought out in this case that goes far beyond the rights of e-ventures Worldwide, and calls into question the very nature of SEO and digital marketing. In previous cases, the courts have found that Google does indeed have First Amendment protection, but in those cases, the questions related to the rankings of a website, rather than deletion of websites simply because they were affiliated with a person or a company. Previous cases have held that, for example, if someone claims they should be ranked higher in the SERP than Google shows, Google prevails on First Amendment principles. “But, if Google bans 366 websites from all search results because they are affiliated with a particular person or company, then that is a very different thing than anything the courts have addressed previously,” said Alexis Arena, e-ventures Worldwide’s attorney.
Google did not offer a response to our request for a comment, but they did provide a copy of their most recent June 1 legal filing, which attempted to reinforce their First Amendment claims and argue again for dismissal, again reinforcing its opinion that search engine results are “editorial opinions” and therefore qualify for First Amendment protection.
What is SEO and is it a legitimate strategy?
“Before Google refined their algorithm, getting on the first page of search results often could be achieved with tactics like keyword stuffing and artificial linking schemes, but those days are gone,” said Jeev Trika, CEO of e-ventures Worldwide. “Because of changes to Google’s algorithms, Internet entrepreneurs and Web publishers like myself now go the extra mile to provide websites and articles that are relevant, useful, and written to journalistic standards, and that has made the virtual world a better place.”
But, says Trika, Google has overstepped its bounds in invoking First Amendment rights to arbitrarily quash websites without review, on the basis of an unsubstantiated third party anonymous tip, and outside the realm of the Google algorithm. “Google’s actions deny businesses the basic right to market themselves in the digital economy,” said Trika. “Google in reality controls the market for Internet advertising, and must be held to a higher standard.”
Trika suggests “Google is not drawing a distinction between generally accepted search engine optimization techniques -- such as simply creating and publishing outstanding articles and useful information -- and what they refer to as search engine ‘manipulation.’ SEO is simply engaging in an ever-changing array of tactics to gain recognition -- something businesses have done long before the Internet existed. By Google’s own definition of ‘manipulation,’ any company using header tags or incorporating keywords into headlines could be subject to arbitrary de-indexing.”
“Google’s business model isn’t, at the end of the day, providing a free search engine or publishing data, it’s selling advertisements,” said Trika. “The free search engine is merely a vehicle for doing so. Google has an economic reason to deny legitimate Web publishers who are promoting SEO placement in the SERPs so that they can sell more advertisements, but that type of anti-competitive action should not be protected by the First Amendment.”

You can check your site speed with a couple of free tools. Google’s PageSpeed Insights allows you to enter the URL of any page and receive a grade for it on a scale of 1-100. Ideally, your pages should score 85 or better to be considered fast. Anything below that will require improvements.
Fortunately, the tool also has you covered on that end. Within the same report, Google lists possible areas where you can implement technical tweaks and improve the speed at which a page loads. Recommendations usually range from leveraging browser caching, compressing images, and minifying a page’s CSS.

Less experienced webmasters may think that it’s a good idea to have all their pages crawled by search engines and put on display in Google’s search results. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. Some pages are better off being kept off limits to help increase site security. Examples of these are backend pages, administrator login pages and other pages that aren’t meant to be seen by the general public.
You’ll also want to restrict bot access to inconsequential pages that don’t cater to the interests of your general pages. Dynamic pages, checkout pages and others that are generated by custom parameters set by users should be blocked with robots.txt. Leaving them open to indexing risks getting your crawl budget consumed by inconsequential URLs that don’t aid your conversion process. It also dilutes and thins out the PageRank that’s passed from page to page, leaving your main landing pages with less potent ranking power.
To check your site’s robots.txt file, just go to www.yourdomain.com/robots.txt. You should see a simple file like the one above. Make sure that the file allows all the search engines you want to be seen on to crawl your site. You should also check if your site’s public-facing pages are open to access or not. If they aren’t, you’ll need to perform an audit to determine which pages can be displayed on search and which ones are off-limits.
  1. Optimize Your XML Sitemap
The XML sitemap is an optional but important part of a website from a search visibility perspective. Like the robots.txt file, search engines read this document to guide their crawls. A properly written XML sitemap provides information on which pages you want search engines to index and how frequently they’re updated by the webmaster. It should also give search engines some valuable clues on the hierarchy of pages in your site.
The XML sitemap is not to be confused with the HTML sitemap that some websites have. The former is an XML file that’s made for search engines specifically while the latter is more akin to a webpage that lists the pages of a site and is meant more for human users. An XML sitemap would look something similar to this:
To check whether your site has an XML sitemap or not, try typing one of these in your browser’s address bar:
  • yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
  • yourdomain.com/sitemap_xml
Most sitemaps will be in these addresses, but some others might not be. If you don’t find it in these addresses, you can always check your CMS. Most modern platforms either have XML sitemap generators out of the box or have plugins to support that functionality.
After generating your sitemap, set up a Google Search Console account (if you don’t already have one for your site). You can let Google know about your sitemap by submitting its address under Crawl>Sitemaps. If successful, you’ll get a report on your sitemap similar to this in a few days:
This report will give you an idea on whether or not Google is able to crawl and index the pages that you want appearing in its search results.
  1. Deal with Crawl Errors
A crawl error is reported in Google Search Console when Googlebot is unable to read a webpage that it was once able to crawl and cache. When this happens, normal indexing cycles can be disrupted and a site’s search visibility could suffer especially if the crawl errors affect important pages in your site. If crawl errors persist for months, search engines sometimes take the URLs of affected pages off their search result pages.
While crawl errors are a normal occurrence in just about every site, keeping them down to a minimum and preventing them from happening to your site’s vital pages is essential in maintaining good search visibility. There are two main types of crawl errors, specifically:
  • Site errors – These issues often emanate from major technical hiccups that affect a website’s uptime. As such, they tend to disrupt entire sites rather than individual pages. Site error subtypes include:
  1. DNS errors
  2. Bot failure
  3. Server errors
These issues can usually be addressed by addressing problems with domain name and hosting providers. In some cases, the issues may be due to improper site configuration. Enlisting the help of a professional web developer should address sitewide crawl errors.
  • URL errors – As the name suggests, URL errors affect only individual web addresses. This type of error usually happens when:
  1. An indexed webpage is deleted and yields a 404 Not Found error
  2. An indexed URL is now being restricted by login requirements
If a page was deleted intentionally but has a new version that’s up and running, 301 redirect the old URL to the new one. If the page has no replacement but once held an important place in your site, consider redirecting it to the page that’s closest to it in terms of contextual relevance. If the page has no replacement and was not very important to begin with, just let it remain in its 404 Not Found status and let Google flush it out of its cache in a few months.

  1. Establish Clear Navigation Pathways
Good internal linking is essential to SEO excellence. Search bots need to find their way around your site easily to allow for better indexing and optimum PageRank flow. The more logical your internal linking scheme is, the easier it is for search engines to determine which pages in your site hold the greatest degrees of importance.
You can get this started by making sure your navigation menus are clear and indicative of your site’s page hierarchy. Links from main navigation menus carry the most potent equity within a site, so make sure every major section of your website is represented here.
Typically, the best way to approach this is by following the classic pyramid site architecture model where your home page represents the “tip” of the pyramid and cascades to sets of more specific categories, subcategories and product/content pages. In this model, there is a “chain” of internal links starting from the home page down to the site’s innermost pages.
In practice, you can do this by having your most important categories in the main navigation menu bar and using dropdown-style menus for subcategories. Within the category pages themselves, you can link to the subcategories and individual pages under them.
It’s not just in the navigation and sidebar menus that you should link to internal pages. You can also do this in your site’s articles whenever a relevant product, category or person is mentioned.
  1. Eliminate Broken Links
Links are the conduits by which bots pass and discover new pages. They’re also the “pipes” through which PageRank flows to give pages the ranking power they need. When links are rendered non-functional, PageRank does not flow and ranking performance can take a hit. This is why you need to make sure that links in your site are regularly checked and working properly.
To quickly scan your site for broken links, download and install the Screaming Frog search engine spider application for Windows or Mac. This tool allows you to simulate a search engine crawl on any site to collect valuable SEO data that can be exported to a CSV file. This application has a ton of great uses, but right now we’ll focus on its ability to find broken links.
To do this, enter your site’s URL in the web address field and hit the Start button. You’ll notice that the tool will start collecting data on every page it finds. Wait until the crawl finishes and click Bulk Export in the menu. Click on All Anchor Text.
You will then be asked to name the file. Name it whatever you want and save it. Open it in Excel afterwards.
You’ll see several columns including:
  • Type – The value HREF denotes that it’s a hyperlink.
  • Source – This is the URL where the link can be found.
  • Destination – The URL that the link is pointing to.
  • Alt Text – The alternate text that describes the link
  • Anchor – The text where the URL is attached to form the link
  • Status Code – The response codes that bots receive when they try to access the link
  • Status – The meaning of the status code received
  • Follow – Indicates whether or not the link has the rel=”nofollow” attribute.
You only need to be concerned about the values under Status Code. Sort them from largest to smallest and see if you get any values that range from 404 Not Found or higher. Investigate each one. Typically, broken links happen when there’s a typo in the link’s URL or if the destination page has been deleted. Links with typos should be corrected while links pointing to non-existent pages can either be deleted or edited to point to functional pages.
  1. Add Schema.Org Markups
In their push towards delivering richer and more accurate search results, Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex and other players in the search industry formed Schema.org. This is a joint effort to unify structured data markup styles across the Web, making it easier for search engine algorithms to understand human language better than ever.
In plain English, Schema markups are HTML elements that are affixed to certain important words in your site’s content. This helps search engines understand that a phrase like sous vide chicken is a recipe rather than just a random string of words. This also helps search algorithms establish and understand contextual relationships between words they find on the web.
There are lots of Schema markups and each of them help search engines make sense out of human language regardless of what language you speak. The most common application of Schema would be in identifying your local businesses. You can use Schema to help search engines identify your brand name and associate it with an address as well as a local phone number.Related:Group Buy SEO Tools
Take the text above for instance. On the surface, it looks like a perfectly normal block of text stating the name, address and phone number of a business. On the code level, however, this is how this text looks like:Related:Group Buy SEO Tools
You can see that Schema code identifies the business name, address and phone number exactly as they are and refers them back to Schema.org. This data is then used by search engines to better understand the information displayed and understand that these are the basic details of a local business.
Schema data for local businesses is believed to influence Google=s local search results as well as its My Business three-packs. In this case, we applied both Schema.org markups to our website and optimized our Google My Business listing. The result is a top ranking for us when you search for an SEO company in our area.
Adding Schema markups isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but you can study how to do it in the Schema.org site. Also, you’ll be happy to know that some theme developers have already started automatically adding Schema markups to their creations. Plugin developers have also started developing extensions that automate the addition of Schema elements in content like recipes, addresses, tables, etc.
There’s plenty more that goes into SEO, but applying these nine technical optimizations should put you in a very competitive position whatever your niche is. Winning in the search engine arena is for organizations that sweat the details and do all the little things. If you want to run a campaign that ultimately dominates your market, technical SEO is as good a starting point as any.

For the uninitiated, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) might sound a little sleazy. If you need to use special techniques to help your site appear at the top of Google search results, doesn’t that mean that—in some weird way—you’re cheating?

Not in the slightest. At the end of the day, Google needs to consider a variety of factors in order to help internet users find the most relevant websites for their search queries. Don’t think of SEO as a cheat code, think of it as a search engine aid. After all, when you’re typing things like “what in the world is SEO” into your Google search bar, articles that tell you just that are exactly what you want to find, right?

Putting up great blog content is just the beginning of your SEO journey. Here are five no-brainer tips to help you optimize your site, even if you’re an SEO beginner.

Find and use relevant keywords
Users frequently type the same phrases into Google when they’re looking for something. Things like “how to make risotto” and “is my dog acting normal?” If all is well in the Googleverse, typing in these search prompts will result in pertinent responses to their queries, like a recipe for risotto or a pet therapist’s site. Humans, as a species, are not all that different from one another. We tend to type the same kinds of search prompts again and again.

You can identify popular search terms and phrasing using Google Keyword Planner. What Google Keyword Planner does is take people’s search prompts and assign value to each of them. Simply log in with your Google account and select “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website, or category.” Type something in—say, “risotto recipes”—and a variety of related phrases that Google users tend to search for will pop up. These phrases are called “keywords,” and they are the heart of your affiliate blog.

You can use this tool to determine which keywords make high-traffic blog topics. If your blog is about interior decorating, you might find through the keyword planner that “mid-century modern furniture” is currently a hot search term. By incorporating this phrase into your blog—either as a topic or in an existing post about modern furniture—you’re more likely to attract searchers who are Googling this very topic.

Use H1 title tags sparingly
In HTML, H1 stands for Heading One, the largest and most prominent heading on a page. The H1 is one of the first things search engines see after the title of your page. That makes it an incredibly powerful page element. According to SEO software company Moz’s bi-yearly survey on search engine ranking factors, the titles on your page are one of the nine most important considerations a search engine makes.

It’s easy to add multiple H1 headings to a page, by simply surrounding text with

tags. But doing so can confuse search engines, who will prioritize an H1 heading if there is only one, but treat them as less relevant content if they’re used a lot. Use an H1 for the biggest heading on your page, and H2 or H3 headings for subheads or section heads. As for what should be in that H1 title? Something relevant to searchers. You know, like a keyword.
Get yourself some non-spammy backlinks
Backlinks get a bad rap because overzealous marketers have abused them over the years. But they’re not a dirty word—literally, a backlink is an incoming hyperlink from one web page to another website. The reason they’re sometimes misunderstood is because there’s a whole Internet underbelly of so-called SEO companies that you can pay to link to your site on their networks of low-quality articles. Don’t do it! This is a move that’s sure to get you on Google’s bad side.

How do you get the good kind of backlinks, though? Stick to organic linking, not the paid kind. If you provide a service, encourage customers to write reviews on other sites. If you’re a blogger, ask another blogger if you can write a guest post for them, and link back to your site in the post. If you use WordPress comments, makes sure your comment username links to your blog.

Overall, backlinks are the number one way Google decides which sites are authorities and ranks them accordingly. After all, if other sites are linking to yours, Google should be, too! If you write good content and participate in online communities, you can develop a healthy ecosystem of backlinks over time.

Create a sitemap and tell Google about it
A sitemap is a very basic list of pages accessible to search engine “crawlers”—programs that search the web for relevant search results—and users. Sitemaps are usually written in XML, a metalanguage that crawlers can understand and transmit to search engines.

You don’t need to know any XML to write your own sitemap. You can copy Google’s example or use a variety of free, third party tools to generate one. Or, if you’re running a WordPress site, simply install the Google XML Sitemaps plugin.

The plugin will automatically notify Google (and dozens of other search engines, for that matter) of this new crawler-friendly way for it to browse your site’s content, as will some of the third-party tools. Otherwise, you need to tell Google about it yourself. The Google Search Console Sitemaps tool will walk you through the quick process.

Above all, write content for humans
You can come up with a lot of ways to catch a search engine’s attention. But setting up your site to appeal to robots ignores why search engines exist in the first place—to help people.

Google and other search engines keep their algorithms mainly secret, both because they don’t want us to be able to exploit their weaknesses, and because they are constantly changing. A search engine’s goal is to match people with the content most relevant to what they’re looking for. That means any short-lived solution for “gaming” a search engine isn’t going to last long.

On the other hand, content that people find helpful is going to have a long shelf life. People will return to the same helpful tutorial or recipe, the same funny list or video, over and over. If they really like something, they’ll link it on their own site or Facebook or email it to friends. And as this content gets linked more and more, search engines will take notice and rank it highly.
